“Suffering from mental health issues from a very young age physics actually gave me something to live for.”



What inspires you?

When I was a teacher my students inspired me. Now I am retired my ex-students inspire me, especially the ones who went on to do physics

What did you want to be when you were younger?

Medical doctor


Which subjects did you enjoy at school?

Factual subjects such as the sciences and maths.


What would you like to tell your younger self?

Leave school at 16 and go to the local FE college.


Why did you choose STEM?

It chose me.


How important is it for you to stand out?

Not at all although I wanted to satnd out as a good teacher


What difficulties did you face in the industry, as a woman?

None, but then I didn’t go into an area which was likely to have problems and I wasn’t ambitious.


What advice would you give to the next generation of female scientists?

You can do physics.
