Billie is a writer and an entrepreneur with an engineering background in space and television. She aims to change the way we see the world and our place in it.
“The challenges in life will probably not come from the places you expect. The things you think are going to be hard, or that are fixed parts of the world often turn out to be made of much softer stuff. This is true both literally and metaphorically.”
What inspires you?
Inspiration is all around. It flows through the fabric of the world we have built.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
I wanted to be some form of a revolutionary leader, but I thought all the revolutions had already taken place.
Which subjects did you enjoy at school?
History and Classics.
What would you like to tell your younger self?
Stick with your gut. Be brave even when it seems foolish. Also, you’re a woman. FYI.
Why did you choose STEM?
I try to always have a problem to solve. Having a goal makes the task of mastering arcane and intricate knowledge that seems off topic tolerable.
How important is it for you to stand out?
I have always avoided standing out. Unfortunately standing out is important for getting things done.
What difficulties did you face in the industry, as a woman?
I haven’t been out as a woman long enough to answer this clearly. Not being out however caused intense anxiety and long term damage to my body.
What advice would you give to the next generation of female scientists?
Build networks. Understand yourself and understand the game you are in. Its not the one you are told you are playing.
